Do You Need to be Broken to See a Counsellor?

We've all heard the stereotype: counselling is only for people with "serious issues," those grappling with major mental health crises. This misconception often prevents people from seeking support when they could truly benefit. The truth is, counselling isn't just for "big problems" – it's for anyone navigating the complexities of life.

Think of it this way: we go to the doctor for check-ups even when we're feeling relatively healthy because it's about preventative care, addressing minor issues before they become major problems, and maintaining overall well-being. Counselling can be approached in a similar way.

Counsellors work with individuals facing a wide spectrum of challenges. In my practice I work with people who just want to offload their daily stresses of life, of being a parent, how the world events are affecting them, relationship difficulties, life transitions, family issues and general feelings of unhappiness. Sometimes people do not have a clear reason of why they seek therapy but they just want a safe, contained space to have time dedicated to them.

Counselling is a valuable resource for anyone who wants to improve their mental and emotional well-being, regardless of the size of their challenges. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as taking care of your physical health. If you're struggling, or simply want to explore ways to enhance your life, consider reaching out to a counsellor.
