Navigating Conversations About Race: A Path to Understanding
Updated: Aug 27
Understanding the Emotional Impact of Race

Since the tragic killing of George Floyd, many people have begun to reflect on their relationship with race. This includes both white individuals and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour). There is a growing wave of self-examination as people seek to understand the emotional impact of race in our society. Many are reading books, engaging in discussions with friends, and participating in dialogues with one another.
If you find yourself here, you might be grappling with the awkward silences that often accompany conversations about racism. You may feel scared of saying the wrong thing, or perhaps you feel attacked or burdened with guilt for simply expressing your thoughts. This is especially true if you believe you haven’t done anything wrong.
The Journey to Becoming an Ally
Becoming more aware and understanding, whether as a white ally to BIPOC or as a BIPOC individual holding space for your own experiences, is not an easy journey. However, if you are willing to try, our course can guide you in transforming hope into reality.
At Kokoro, our intention is to support you where traditional training may have fallen short. We aim to prepare you to express your feelings when discussions about race or racism arise. For those of you who work with clients, patients, or students and feel uncertain about how to engage, this course will equip you with the necessary tools to navigate these conversations safely.
A Safe Space for Growth
If any of this resonates with you, this course is designed specifically for you. In small groups, you will work alongside a psychotherapist and race specialist to examine your relationship with race. You will have the opportunity to practice what you need to say and do within a supportive learning environment.
To effectively address the racial wounds we carry, it is essential for both white individuals and BIPOC to engage in this work together. While further wounding may be inevitable, we can avoid unnecessary pain by first doing the necessary work within our own cultural contexts.
This is why we at Kokoro Therapy are offering two separate groups initially. Our goal is to bring white and BIPOC individuals together in a third group, allowing for deeper healing of the racial wound. We are committed to going as far as you are willing and able to facilitate this challenging endeavor, embracing the messiness, anger, and deep suffering that may arise.
Embracing the Complexity of Race
Navigating conversations about race can be complex and emotionally charged. It’s important to acknowledge that everyone’s experiences and feelings are valid. Engaging in these discussions requires courage and vulnerability. By participating in our course, you will not only gain insights but also develop the skills to hold space for these difficult conversations.
The Importance of Listening
One of the most crucial aspects of discussing race is the ability to listen. Listening is not just about hearing words; it’s about understanding the emotions and experiences behind them. When we listen actively, we create an environment where everyone feels valued and heard. This is a vital step in fostering empathy and understanding.
Building Bridges Through Dialogue
Dialogue is a powerful tool for bridging gaps between different perspectives. By engaging in open and honest conversations, we can begin to dismantle the barriers that divide us. Our course encourages dialogue that is respectful and constructive, allowing participants to explore their feelings and thoughts without fear of judgment.
The Role of Self-Reflection
Self-reflection is an essential part of this journey. It allows us to examine our own biases, assumptions, and experiences. By reflecting on our own relationship with race, we can better understand how it shapes our interactions with others. This self-awareness is key to becoming a more effective ally and advocate for change.
Moving Forward Together
As we navigate these challenging conversations, it’s important to remember that we are all in this together. The journey towards understanding and healing is ongoing. By participating in our course, you are taking a significant step towards fostering a more inclusive and compassionate community.
In conclusion, the path to understanding race and racism is not easy, but it is essential. By engaging in this work, we can begin to heal the wounds that divide us and create a more equitable society. I invite you to join us at Kokoro Therapy as we embark on this important journey together.
