Are Men Suffering in Silence?

Nearly 1 in 10 men face depression or anxiety, yet less than half seek the treatment they need. Alarmingly, men are more than four times as likely to die by suicide compared to women each year. We must address these disparities and encourage men to seek help.

Men may suffer in silence for a variety of reasons. Cultural expectations and societal norms often dictate that men should be strong, resilient, and self-sufficient, which can create pressure to conceal their feelings or struggles.


Fear of judgment or stigma surrounding mental health issues can also lead to silence as men may worry about appearing weak or vulnerable. Additionally, they might lack the necessary support systems and feel uncertain about how to express their emotions, leading them to internalise their pain. Ultimately, the combination of these factors can result in men feeling isolated in their struggles.
