One of the primary issues in this country is the lack of open discussion about pornography and sex. Therapy provides a space where these topics can be addressed. This is one of the most significant challenges I encounter in therapy sessions. Issues such as low self-esteem stemming from the belief in the narratives portrayed by pornography or unrealistic expectations regarding size, position, or outcomes. Many individuals are exposed to pornography at a young age, typically around 12 years old. While this exposure is common for both genders, boys are more prone to developing addictions. Such addiction leads to a higher tolerance for witnessing unnatural or unhealthy scenarios, resulting in increased exposure to more violent and unrealistic depictions.
What is required is the unlearning of the pornographic narrative and the relearning of a more natural approach to sexual relationships. Although the steps to achieve this are straightforward, overcoming any addiction or compulsive behaviour, especially when it is secretive and readily accessible, can be challenging. Some people are unaware of the impact that pornography is having on their lives, their relationships and their mental health.
If you or someone you know is struggling with any of these issues, it might be worth seeking
a professional to talk it through. Get in touch with me to arrange a free 15-minute conversation.
